Audiobook Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver

Narrated by Joe Arden and Lucy Rivers

“Can I come to watch? ”
Sloane laughs. “No….?”
“Please?”
“No, you weirdo. You cannot come watch.”

“Why not?It sounds both hot and educational.”
Her husky laugh warms my chest. “Because it’s all conficential for one. And for two, you’d distract me.”

My heart lights up with fireworks.
“With my pretty face?”

“Pfft.No.“That ‘no’ is totally a ‘yes’.

Well, guys, I wouldn’t expect one of my favorite reads of the year to be a serial killer rom-com, but here we are. This was the first time I bought an audiobook on TikTok recommendation, and I would give kisses to the person who recommended it if I remember who it was. Butcher and Blackbird is a dream come true.

Long story short, Butcher and Blackbeard is a dark(ish) rom-com that tells the story of two serial un-alivers, Rowen and Sloan. They meet at some … how do I describe it so I don’t spoil the fun of the first chapter… weird circumstances… yes, that sounds good๐Ÿ˜… Two same souls meet, so they decide to do a yearly game together where they compete at hunting their prey and find an unexpected friendship. As their friendship progresses into something more, sceletons of their past will emerge. Will their relationships survive their past? Or will they meet their end quite literally?

Even though this is not too dark a romance, it is still dark, so please check trigger warnings before you start.

“See? Right there. Carhartt. Why couldn’t he have jut punch me in the face like a normal person?”
Rowen: “Probably because he wasn’t normal person, love. I thought the chainsaw was a big clue.”

Sloane: “Are you afraid of losing again, pretty boy?”

Rowen: “I’m affraid of loosing you.”

This book… Brynne created something stunning. I love a good dark romance, but this book made me giggle like a teenage girl’s first time reading a romance book that contains spice (And I am a spicey reader. My Kindle stickers would tell you that ๐Ÿ˜…). I listened to this book on Audible, and Joe and Lucy changed the fantastic book into a masterpiece. I loved every minute of listening to it. It is a duet, which means that Lucy reads the lines of women and Joe reads the man’s lines. THE CHEMISTRY between them… I could not rave about it… It was pure fireworks. I was never so immersed in audiobooks. Most of the time, I had to do something when listening because other way I get distracted and stop listening (ADHD perk probably ๐Ÿ˜…). This book made me stop what I was doing and just listen, giggle, and kick my feet like a lovestroke madwoman. I am going around and recommending it to everybody willing to listen to my rumble ๐Ÿ˜… So I can safely say that I love this book.

My Obsession

What can I say… Give me heroin that is scary as hell but is doing what she thinks is right, and you have a 90% chance that I will give her my heart and love her. Sloan is witty, intelligent, beautiful, scared and scared. But it will not stop her from unaliving big bad guys that are hurting people. She is just the perfect ratio of awkward and smartass. I would want to be her best friend if she were real. I cannot blame Rowan for falling for her. Lucy’s voice is in my head now every time I read Butcher and Blackbird, which suits Sloan. I cannot say enough time casting was just brilliant.

And Rowan… ๐Ÿฅต Girrrl…. Irish accent and smart, reaaaaaally dirty mouth… That should be enough to say. I always fall for that guy; he is in first place on my fictional boyfriends’ list. He is just … ugh… I love, love, love his humor and dirty comments. And his patience with Sloan is just adorable. And Joe’s narration was just top-notch. I listened to it until 2 am, mostly because of his Irish accent and voice.

Spice in this book is something. If you like spice in your book, you will undoubtedly be happy. If you don’t like explicit spice, it is possible just to skip chapters, so you don’t have to read it, but be warned that this book is full of dirty thoughts and double meanings.

When we looked at the side characters, Brynne prepared the fantastic ground for two other books in the series by Lark, Lachlan, Rose, and Fionn. I cannot wait to fall into Leather and Lark and can wait for the third book, Scyth and Sparrow.

Spoilers

Let’s take a look at the plot of the book. I don’t have any complaints. Yes, the book has explicit content for unaliving and spice, but you should read your trigger warnings before starting. Even the scene with accidental cannibalism wasn’t really that horrible, so don’t worry about that one.

I want to address spice. This book has the most extended spicey scene I have ever read, and I am not mad about it. Twenty-one pages, I needed to count it. I needed a cold shower after those chapters ๐Ÿฅต๐Ÿ˜….

I was also pleased about the final “boss” David. The book distracted me by Spice so much that I completely forgot about him until he appeared again, so it was really pleasant that the book surprised me with this twist.

I cannot recommend this audiobook or book enough. If you like dark romance with funny banter, smart-ass female characters, a man with an Irish accent and filthy mouth, a good amount of spice, and don’t mind some explicit violence, this book will be a match made in heaven.
